The Foreign Minister of the Russian Federation Sergey Lavrov has arrived in Armenia for a two-day official visit at the invitation of Armenian Foreign Minister Edward Nalbandian. Lavrov visited Tsitsernakaberd this morning and laid a wreath at the memorial to the Armenian genocide victims. Aside from official meetings, Lavrov will meet with the students and faculty of the Yerevan State University to assess the 20 years of diplomatic relations between the Republic of Armenia and the Russian Federation. The protocol on establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries was signed on April 3, 1992.
Speaking to Armenian media earlier, Lavrov praised the work of the co-chairs of the OSCE Minsk Group, the international body mediating a solution to the Armenian-Azerbaijani conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh. Russia is a co-chair of the group, alongside the USA and France.“The mediators are performing their duties honestly, adhering to the principles of the Helsinki Final Act: the non-use of force or threat of force, respect for territorial integrity and the right of nations to self-determination. The co-chairs’ position has not changed,” Lavrov said.
The Russian Foreign Minister will tomorrow go to Azerbaijan.
