GARSI – Gulf and Red Sea Initiative

LINKS (DAR) has launched a new initiative within the framework of its programme Europe and the Islamic World. GARSI – Gulf and Red Sea Initiative seeks to provide timely information and analysis on the countries of the Gulf and Red Sea and their immediate neighbourhood, and a space for dialogue between Europe and the region

A spokesperson for LINKS (DAR) said that GARSI responds to a need to keep policy makers and opinion formers i n Europe abreast of current events and opinion in the region, taking a holistic approach to an increasingly interlinked region stretching from the Horn of Africa to the Caspian, where Europe has considerable and increasing strategic, political and economic interests, but on which information is often patchy or distorted. It also seeks to provide a space for debate and dialogue on key issues of interest to both sides.  The challenges ahead for the region and for European engagement with it, require creative and innovative actions with win-win results, and that can only be achieved if there is a readiness and capacity to think outside the box, an approach that GARSI embraces.

Among the topics that GARSI will be looking at in the next 18 months are,

  • Intra-regional linkages and EU engagement with the region
  • Economic challenges and opportunities in the transition away from resource dependence
  • Conflict and post conflict issues, with a focus on Yemen, Somalia and Egypt
  • Transformational processes in Saudi Arabia
  • Migration issues from the Horn of Africa
  • Young people and societal change; vocational training and re-training
  • The role of soft power and the use of soft power tools
  • The fight against radicalisation
  • Iran and the region
  • Military, security and maritime issues and the role of external powers
